Gas Water Heater Repair in San Diego — Get Your Hot Water Back
Gas Water Heater Repair Across San Diego County
Most Gas Water Heater Problems Come Down to a Few Parts
When a gas water heater stops making hot water, the cause is usually one of a short list: a pilot that will not stay lit, a failed thermocouple or flame sensor, a bad gas control valve, a clogged burner, a venting problem, or sediment built up in the bottom of the tank. Our licensed plumbers diagnose which one it is, show you what we found, and give you an upfront price for the repair before any work starts.
If the tank itself is leaking or the heater is near the end of its life, we will tell you honestly whether repair still makes sense, and walk you through replacement or tankless options if it does not.

Commonly Asked Questions
Why does my gas water heater pilot light keep going out?
The most common cause is a worn thermocouple or flame sensor that no longer tells the gas valve the pilot is lit. A dirty pilot tube, a draft near the burner, a venting problem or a failing gas control valve can also cause it. Relighting it over and over is a sign a part needs to be replaced.
Why is my gas water heater not making hot water?
Check that the pilot is lit and the gas supply valve is on. If both are fine, the issue is usually the thermocouple, the gas control valve, the burner, or a broken dip tube that mixes cold water into the hot. A plumber can test each of these and pinpoint the failed part.
I smell gas near my water heater. What should I do?
Leave the house, do not switch lights or appliances on or off, and call SDG&E or 911 from outside. Do not try to relight the pilot. Once the utility has made the area safe, call us to repair the source of the leak.
Why is my water heater making popping or rumbling noises?
That sound is usually sediment at the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under the sediment boils and pops as the burner heats it. Flushing the tank often fixes it. Heavy buildup reduces efficiency and can shorten the life of the tank, which is why we recommend regular flushing in San Diego’s hard water.
Can a leaking gas water heater be repaired?
It depends where the water is coming from. Leaks at the fittings, the drain valve or the temperature and pressure relief valve can usually be repaired. If the tank itself is leaking, it cannot be repaired and the heater needs to be replaced.
Is it worth repairing an older gas water heater?
Tank-style gas water heaters typically last about 8 to 12 years. If yours is in that range and needs a major part, or the tank shows rust or leaks, replacement is often the better value. If it is younger and the problem is a part like a thermocouple or valve, repair usually makes sense. We will give you both options with prices.
How much does gas water heater repair cost?
It depends on the part that failed and the access to the heater. We diagnose the problem first and give you an upfront price before any work begins, so you approve the cost before we start.
Do you repair tankless gas water heaters too?
Yes. We service tank and tankless gas water heaters. Tankless units need periodic descaling in San Diego’s hard water, and many error codes trace back to scale, venting or gas supply issues.
Does my water heater need earthquake straps?
Yes. California requires water heaters to be braced or strapped. If yours is not, we can add compliant strapping during your repair visit. Learn more in our guide to earthquake bracing for water heaters.
